Day 216: The one with the baby sloth

After a down pour this morning the sky finally turned blue and we jumped in a water taxi over to our closest decent beach…

The beach crew.

Foreground: Harper fishing. Background: the dog who originally taught Harper to fish! He has exactly the same fishing style as Harper, basically to stare into the water and pace backwards and forwards!

Cheeky afternoon beer.

Just as we were getting ready to leave the beach one of the members of our group informed us she had just seen a sloth with its baby a few metres away. Lucy has been wanting to see a sloth for the entire trip and has never moved as fast as she did to get to this sloth…

Mum is hanging upside down, baby is clinging onto belly looking to the left (incase you can’t work the photo out).

Mum still upside down, baby reaching out for a leaf.

Mum upside down facing camera and baby’s back legs and stumpy tail as it trys to re-arrange itself on mums belly.

Photo to show how close they were to us (they are the grey lump hanging at the end of the branch).

They didn’t seem bothered by us taking photos at all, they just seemed to be concentrating very hard on eating as many leaves as poss! We even saw another sloth a few branches higher up who we think may have been the dad.

Lucy now claims this is the best thing she has seen on her whole travels and is even better than Machu Picchu.

Here’s a piccy of us on the boat heading back to Bocas mainland…

Lucy, Yaz, Jess, Jill, Tom.

Here’s our view whilst walking to dinner in the evening…

Oooh.

Ahhh.

Day 215: The one underwater

This morning Russ went diving with Tom, Jill and Jess to film a little dive video that Jill is going to edit. Sadly Yaz has an ear infection so had to miss out. Russel got to have a play with Jill’s camera underwater which he fell in love with, sadly we can’t show you the video, but here are some photo’s the guys took on their photography dive earlier in the week…

Tom with a large starfish.

A sea-spider thingy-ma-wotsit.

Little friend of Nemo’s.

Some coral wrapped with a hairy worm thing.

Tom blowing a pretty sweet ring.

Russel upside down.

Spot the baby wray in this pic...

Tom sitting on the WC on top of the wreck.

Yaz being sick into the toilet?

After diving we chilled out for the afternoon waiting for the showing of Jill’s video. Sadly there was an all day power cut in Bocas which meant everything ground to a halt. The water stopped working as a result and you couldn’t even flush the toilet. Fingers crossed things are sorted for tomorrow!

Big underwater love x

Day 214: The one with Valentines

So today was Valentines day and Lucy treated Russel to breakfast in bed… many thanks! We then caught up on the blog and popped across the water to Bibi’s for a swim and a little drink. In the eve we joined Tom and Yaz for some food at a little place on the main street, and that was about as romantic as it got we’re afraid!

Ciao x

Day 213: The one they had all been waiting for

Amazing weather again today, so we headed to the beach for an all day beach BBQ con 2 bottles of rum and a few beers. We say the one they had all been waiting for, because today was the first day with amazing weather all day and having everyone together. Russel failed to get any pics we’re afraid but later we headed to a bar and things got a bit crazy…

Tom and Jill eating a kitten.

Everyone looking a bit tipsy.

How many pictures of Russel and kittens are there on this blog?

Russel did partake in a suicide tequila – where you snort the salt, drink the shot and squeeze the lime in your eye! At least it was free.

Hangover tomorrow?

Day 212: The one with the Bluff

Lucy had built up a bit of cabin fever over the past few days so when the sun came out this morning we headed straight for one of Boca’s best beaches – Playa Bluff.

Blue sky! And lots of it!

Cheesy beach shot.

The waves at this beach are crazy…

Massive waves! Russ managed to play in them for a bit whilst Lucy refused to go in deeper than her ankles.

After lots of sunbathing we headed over to the little beach restaurant for possibly the worlds best brownie with ice cream.

When we got home we headed to Casa Verde for a BBQ and an amazing sunset with a quick view of some dolphins!

Outside our apartment.

From the dock at Casa Verde.

Another view from the dock.

Brilliant weather, brilliant day! x

Day 211: The one with more diving

At 8.45am Russ was up to meet the others at the dive shop for his last 2 dives of the course. These were 2 of the most fun dives he has done. One was peak performance buoyancy and basically involved playing with hoops and things underwater to perfect the control of buoyancy using breathing techniques. The second was underwater photography which was also really good!

In the afternoon Lucy was subjected to sitting and listening to an afternoon of diving theory which was not fun for anyone.

Check this lizard we found at Casa Verde.

Apologies x

Day 210: The one with Advanced Open Water

Today Russ, Tom and Yaz dived 3 of the 5 dives they need to become advanced. This included a deep dive to 30 meters deep and a night dive in the pitch black.

Forms, forms, forms.

The dive shop parrot – Piñata.

The boat getting loaded up.

That’s all folks x

Day 209: The one with Rocky 2

Today was revision day for Russel, Tom and Yaz, as they start their Advanced Open Water course tomorrow. We sat at Tom and Yaz’s flat most of the day before we got cabin fever and ventured out for a smoothie and then happy hour cocktails.

After having a bit of dinner we headed to The Book Shop bar to watch our friend Rocky in action. As we mentioned Lindsey knocked out a 300lb man a week or so ago. Tonight another guy had challenged her to knock him out for $100. This sounds crazy because IT IS CRAZY! But this is Bocas del Toro and this is the kind of thing they do here.

So the bar was packed ready to see the punch. Both the puncher and receiver seemed rather nervous (as you would be)…

Lindsey limbering up.

Watch this video to see the result…

Normal people looking a bit shocked at what they had just seen.

It was a good punch but Rocky slightly missed the spot and the guy survived although he had some blood to show for it…

…and so did Lindsey

1 x broken finger – no punching for her for a while.

Bocas is crazy! x

PS, To the parents and grandparents: don’t worry we haven’t resorted to punching anyone, we’re still normal x

Day 208: The one where they chilled at Jess’s house

Today we had a well needed lie in and in the afternoon we headed up to Jess’s house to chill out on her balcony to escape the heat and have some rum! Jess lives right opposite the beach so later on we walked down for a quick swim with Harper the dog…

Being creative with some driftwood – spelling out ‘Yaz’

A very relaxing day! x
